Stanford Women's Basketball Defeats Cross-Bay Rival California

STANFORD, Calif. - Sophomore Lindsey Yamasaki had a team-high 17 points to lead Stanford to an impressive 83-57 win over California Friday night at Maples Pavilion. The Stanford women's basketball team improved its record to 11-4, 4-1 in the conference with the win over the Golden Bears. California fell to 5-10 overall and 0-5 in the Pac-10. The Cardinal has now won nine of its last 10 games.

Stanford made a quick impact, opening the game with a powerful 22-3 run. Cal fought back to just a seven-point deficit, but could get no closer. Stanford held the Bears scoreless for the final 3:29 of the first half. Yamasaki scored the last 12 points, bringing the halftime score to 43-20. The Cardinal's stellar defense held the Golden Bears to a 23% field goal percentage.

The Cardinal kept dominating Cal throughout the second half. Sophomore Bethany Donaphin scored all of her 11 points in the second half finishing with an impressive streak, shooting 5-of-7 from the floor. The Cardinal provided quite a show shooting 55.4% for the game, while Cal was only able to convert 32.2% of their field goals.

The Cardinal had five players record point totals in double digits, including Yamasaki with17, Milena Flores with 12, Donaphin and Carolyn Moos both with 11 and Jamie Carey with 10. Yamasaki drained 2-of-3 from behind the 3-point line.

In the battle of the boards, the Cardinal out-rebounded the Golden Bears 40-30, with Donaphin pulling down a team-high 11 rebounds. Flores led the Cardinal with 8 assists. The win gives Stanford an 18-4 all-time record against the Golden Bears at Maples Pavilion.

Stanford will travel to Seattle to continue Pacific-10 Conference play against the Washington Huskies Thursday, Jan. 27 at 7 p.m.
