Stanford, Calif. - The 12th-ranked Stanford men's volleyball team fell to top-ranked UCLA 15-11, 15-9, 15-11 in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match today at Maples Pavilion. The Cardinal, which played in front of a season-high 1,016 fans, drop to 2-2 on the season and 2-2 in the MPSF, while UCLA improved to 5-0 overall and 2-0 in the MPSF.
The Cardinal were led in kills for the fourth consecutive game by freshman middle blocker Curt Toppel (Pacific Palisades, CA). Toppel recorded his second-highest kill output of the season with 28 kills on .288 percent hitting. Stanford also received double-digit kill performances from junior middle blocker Brett Youngberg (Surrey B.C.) and freshman outside hitter Seth Ring (Bend, OR). Youngberg had 15 kills on 31 attacks, while Ring compiled 14 kills.
Junior setter Josh Lukens (San Diego, CA) had a season-high 62 kills on the night and Toppel recorded a Stanford season-high 3 service aces, two coming on the opening serves of the match.
Stanford will be on the road for the next six matches, returning home for a Thursday, Feb. 17 match with Pepperdine at 7 p.m.
