STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford swimmers touched the wall first in nine of 11 events to beat the University of the Pacific 118-82 Tuesday afternoon at deGuerre Pool. Stanford improves to 4-3 overall on the season while the Tigers fall to 5-8 overall.
The Cardinal went one-two in the 200 medley relay to open the meet, and never trailed. Tiger junior Piotr Florczyk won the 1000 freestyle, but Stanford won the next four events to extend the lead. Individual event winners for the Cardinal included Greg Long (Reston, VA/South Lakes HS) in the 200 free, senior Kurt Spenser (Ann Arbor, MI/Pioneer HS) in the 50 free, sophomore Michael O'Neil (Roseburg, OR/Roseburg HS) in the 200 individual medley, freshman Dan Westcott (The Woodlands, TX/The Woodlands HS) in the 200 butterfly, sophomore Reid Gustin (Cincinnati, OH/St. Xavier HS) in the 200 backstroke and freshman John Waters (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich HS) in the 500 free. Senior Steve Ronson (Tustin, CA/Irvine HS) touched first in the 100 breaststroke, but was swimming unofficially as Stanford had already clinched the meet.
Stanford returns to action on Feb. 5 at 1:00 against No. 6 USC in Los Angeles. The Cardinal concludes the dual-meet season at deGuerre on Feb. 19 against No. 4 California at noon. Pacific is at No. 4 California on Feb. 9 at 2:00 p.m.
