The 13th-ranked Stanford men's volleyball team lost its third consecutive match with a 15-6, 15-9, 15-4 loss at second-ranked Long Beach State. The Cardinal is now 2-3 overall and in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play.
Freshman middle blocker Curt Toppel (Pacific Palisades, CA) improved his streak of 20-kill matches by recording 27 kills against the 49ers. Toppel has reached the 20-kill plateau in all five Cardinal matches this season. Junior middle blocker Brett Youngberg (Surrey, B.C.) was the only other Stanford player to reach double-digit kills with 11.
Stanford has yet to play a match longer than three games during the 2000 season. The Cardinal were held to a .264 hitting percentage for the match, but allowed Long Beach State to hit .492.
Junior Josh Lukens (San Diego, CA) tallied 53 assists and had a team-leading eight digs for the match.
The Cardinal will face fifth-ranked USC tonight at 7:00 p.m.
