STANFORD, Calif - Sophomore forward Johanes Maliza scored at 60:13 to give the fourth-ranked Stanford men's soccer team a 1-0 victory over No. 1 UCLA in a Pacific-10 Conference match at New Maloney Field. With the win, the Cardinal improves to 9-1-1 overall and evens its Pac-10 mark at 1-1-0. In suffering their first loss of the season, the Bruins fall to 8-1-0 and 0-1-0.
Today's victory marked Stanford's first over UCLA since October 11, 1987. In 1992, the Cardinal defeated UCLA in penalty kicks following a 1-1 tie in a MPSF playoff match.
After outshooting the visitors 12-3 in the first half, Stanford broke through with the game's only goal at 60:13. Senior midfielder Sean Sylvis stole the ball from a UCLA defender just outside the penalty box and then sent a cross to the far post, where Maliza's header beat Bruin goalkeeper D.J. Countess.
Stanford held a 21-7 advantage in shots but was often thwarted by Countess, who finished with 11 saves. The Cardinal defense posted its ninth shutout of the season as senior netminder Adam Zapala made four saves.
The match was a penalty-filled affair, as the two teams combined for 51 fouls (26 on Stanford, 25 on UCLA) and six yellow-card cautions (three on each).
Stanford is next in action on Thursday, October 12, when it hosts Santa Clara at New Maloney. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
