Sixth-ranked Water Polo Team Falls Short In OT

Oct. 15, 2000

Stanford, Calif. - Top-ranked UCLA stormed back from a three-goal deficit and United States Olympian Sean Kern scored the winning goal in overtime to lift the Bruins to an 8-7 victory over sixth-ranked Stanford in a non-league water polo game on Sunday at the Avery Aquatics Complex.

The Cardinal jumped to a 3-0 first period lead on two goals by Todd Snider and Peter Hudnut. UCLA's Brian Brown scored at 2:15 of the first period, but Stanford then regained a three goal lead, 4-1, at 2:16 in the second period.

However, UCLA added two goals to cut the Cardinal margin to 4-3 at halftime.

Stanford took a 7-5 lead into the final period, but two goals by UCLA's leading scorer Adam Wright, his 24th and 25th goals of the season, sent the game into double overtime. Wright's goal to tie the game at 7-7 was tallied at the 3:11 in the fourth period.

Kern, a member of the 2000 United States Olympic team and the 1999 NCAA Player of the Year, scored at 1:35 of the first overtime, UCLA's first lead of the game. Neither team scored in the second overtime.

Stanford fell to 6-6 overall while UCLA raised its record to 10-2.
