SEATTLE, Wash. - Seniors Sean Sylvis and Corey Woolfolk each scored goals as the second-ranked Stanford men's soccer team avenged its only loss of the year by defeating No. 4 Washington 2-0 in Seattle, Wash. With the win, Stanford (13-1-1 overall) draws into a first-place tie with the Huskies (9-4-0) in the Pacific-10 Conference, as both squads are 4-1-0 in conference play.
Sylvis, who also scored the game-winner with just four minutes remaining in a 2-1 victory at Oregon State on Friday, broke a scoreless tie with a goal at the 25:29 mark. The midfielder took a feed from Woolfolk on the left side and drilled a low shot from 12 yards out.
The match remained 1-0 until 89:29, when Woolfolk sealed the outcome by scoring an unassisted goal. The senior tri-captain now has 18 goals and 18 assists in his career for 56 points, one shy of Stanford's all-time top ten.
Stanford's defense, anchored by senior goalkeeper Adam Zapala, posted its 12th shutout of the year in just 15 matches, lowering the team GAA to 0.26. Zapala made one save en route to his 48th career shutout, while Washington keeper Chad Olsen finished with five.
Stanford continues on its five-game road trip next Sunday, Oct. 29, when the Cardinal travels to Berkeley for a 1:00 p.m. match against California.
