STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford's Scott Leber had two goals and Roger Levesque added another as the second-ranked Cardinal men's soccer team won its sixth straight game, defeating host California 3-0 at Edwards Stadium.
The victory moves Stanford (14-1-1 overall, 5-1-0 Pac-10) into sole possession of first place in the Pacific-10 Conference, a half-game ahead of Washington (4-1-0 Pac-10). The Huskies, who were idle in Pac-10 play this weekend, have three conference games remaining while the Cardinal has two. California saw its three-game winning streak end and falls to 5-10-1 and 2-3-1.
An end-to-end sequence got Stanford on the board just 11:55 into the match. Defender Lee Morrison sent a long ball to midfielder Matt Moses down the right sideline. Moses then sent a cross to Leber, who dribbled around a Cal defender before connecting on a 12-yard shot.
Moses and Leber again teamed up to give the Cardinal a 2-0 lead at the 47:57 mark. Moses' corner kick from the left side found a streaking Leber, who headed the ball into the back of the net for his team-leading 11th goal of the season. Stanford's final score came at 61:19, when Levesque was the recipient of a Corey Woolfolk pass. Woolfolk beat a defender at midfield and led a breakaway down the right sideline, eventually crossing a ball to Levesque, who one-timed a shot to the far post.
Senior goalkeeper Adam Zapala made two saves as the Stanford defense recorded its 13th shutout in 16 games. The Cardinal has now outscored its opponents 52-4 while holding a 288-100 advantage in shots. California keeper Marco Palmieri made eight saves, including five in the second half.
Stanford returns to Berkeley next Saturday, November 4, to battle No. 4 Indiana as part of the California adidas-Legacy Classic. Kickoff from Edwards Stadium is set for 12 noon.
