STANFORD, Calif. - Washington's Bryn Ritchie scored on a header just :53 seconds into overtime as the No. 12 Huskies upset No. 4 Stanford 2-1 in the Pac-10 opener at New Maloney Field. The loss was just the second for the Cardinal since New Maloney Field opened in 1997. Stanford, now 25-2-4 in the facility, was riding a school-record 19-match unbeaten home streak since a 2-1 setback to San Jose State on Sept. 7, 1998.
Washington, which has won seven of its last eight, improves to 7-3-0 overall and 2-0-0 in the Pac-10. Stanford suffers its first loss of the season, falling to 8-1-1 and 0-1-0. After the two teams battled to a 1-1 draw after regulation, Washington quickly resolved the matter in the first overtime. Husky forward Jake Sagare dribbled past a pair of Stanford defenders before being taken down just outside the goalie box. Mike Casale's ensuing free kick deflected off the crossbar and to the left side of the goal box, where Ritchie put away the game-winner.
Stanford opened the scoring at 19:05 when Ryan Nelsen's header found the back of the net for an unassisted goal. Washington tied the game just three minutes later as Ritchie's shot deflected to Zach Kingsley, who beat Cardinal keeper Adam Zapala to the near post.
The Cardinal dominated the second half, outshooting the Huskies 10-1. For the game, Stanford held a 16-5 advantage on shots and an 8-5 edge on corner kicks.
Washington goalie Chad Olsen made three saves while Zapala finished with two.
Stanford returns to action on Sunday, October 8, when they host No. 1 UCLA at 2 p.m.
