LOS ANGELES, Calif. - McKinley Tennyson, Jr. converted a penalty kick at the 111:34 mark to give the No. 18-ranked UCLA men's soccer team a 1-0, double overtime win over top-ranked Stanford in a Pacific-10 Conference match at Drake Stadium.
The loss snaps Stanford's seven-game winning streak and drops the Cardinal to 15-2-1 overall (5-2-0 Pac-10). UCLA improves to 11-6-0 and 2-5-0. Stanford's loss, coupled with Washington's 4-2 victory at Cal earlier Friday, gives the Huskies (13-5-0, 7-1-0) the inaugural Pac-10 men's soccer championship.
With UCLA on the offensive in the 112th minute, Tennyson was taken down by a Stanford defender in the penalty area to draw the penalty kick. Tennyson took the shot and scored for his team-leading 14th goal of the season.
Stanford, which outshot UCLA 18-11 on the match, took all four shots of the first overtime period. However, Bruin goalkeeper D.J. Countess made two of his seven saves to keep the Cardinal off the board.
Cardinal keeper Adam Zapala, who allowed just his fifth goal of the year, made four saves. Stanford will conclude the regular season on Sunday, Nov. 10, when it hosts Oregon State at New Maloney Field. Sunday is also "Senior Day," and a small ceremony will be held honoring the Cardinal's eight seniors just prior to the 2:00 p.m. kickoff.
