STANFORD, Calif. - Mike McDonald has been told to look for more openshots this season. He's taken that advice to heart.

McDonald converted a career-best five 3-pointers and finished with 19 pointsas No. 5 Stanford won its 13th straight season opener with a 100-49 rout ofDivision II San Francisco State on Sunday night.

"We've been after him to hit the open shot and not be afraid of it,"Stanford coach Mike Montgomery said. "We tell him to shoot those. For us it'sa major plus to have all five positions that can score."

Casey Jacobsen and Curtis Borchardt each scored 14 points for the Cardinal,whose 51-point margin of victory matched the third-largest in school history.

DeKeithi Walton scored eight of the Gators' first 12 points and was heldscoreless the rest of the way. Jack MacLeod-Roemer added 10.

San Francisco State was within 11-5 with 15:56 remaining in the first half,but Stanford reeled off 28 straight points over the next nine minutes to putthe game out of reach.

"It's just hard playing them because they're so physical," MacLeod-Roemersaid. "They have so much over us. It helps to see how they play because youunderstand and recognize what you have to do. We should schedule a game likethis every year. It's good for us."

McDonald scored his 15 points in the first eight minutes of the game.

"I'm normally not looking to shoot every time down court," the point guardsaid. "But Casey was penetrating, and leaving me open. The shots just came tome tonight."

The Cardinal shot 71 percent from the field in the first half, and 60 forthe game.

Stanford held a 39-5 lead with just under seven minutes left in the firsthalf and led 54-17 at the break.

"We were anxious to play new faces," Jacobsen said. "We've been going ateach other for so long, we needed to get out on the court and show what wecould do."

The Cardinal continued to increase the lead in the second half, scoring 15unanswered points for an 82-26 margin. The Cardinal built a 97-34 lead with3:17 left.

"It's a positive thing for us," San Francisco State coach Charlie Thomassaid. "It helps us help ourselves. We get national exposure, and it helps ourscholarship fund because of the guaranteed money we get."

The Gators are 32-159 against Division I teams.

Jarron Collins added 12 points and eight rebounds for Stanford.
