SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (Ticker) - The Collins brothers weredouble trouble for Memphis.
Using his superior size and bulk, Jason Collins worked thehigh-low game with his brother Jarron to perfection and scored acareer-best 19 points to lead fifth-ranked Stanford to an 83-60rout of Memphis in the semifinals of the Puerto Rico Shootout.
Stanford (3-0), the favorite of the eight-team tournament, willplay the winner of the game between 14th-ranked Utah and Georgiain the championship on Saturday.
Memphis (1-2) had beaten Miami (Ohio), 60-59, in the first roundon Thursday for coach John Calipari's first win at the school.
Today, Calipari's team had no chance dealing with the size ofthe Cardinal and had to resort to fouling. Stanford went to thefree throw line 40 times, converting 29, while Memphis was15-of-18 from the line.
Jason Collins, a 6-11, 255-pound sophomore, converted 6-of-9shots from the field, 7-of-10 free throws and grabbed eightrebounds in just 23 minutes.
Jarron Collins, a 6-10, 248-pound senior, had 14 points and 10rebounds, hitting 6-of-8 shots from the field.
When the Collins brothers weren't hurting them inside, theTigers also struggled to cover forward Casey Jacobsen, who wentto the free throw line 13 times and led Stanford with 22 points.
Kelly Wise topped Memphis with 21 points.
The Tigers shot just 36 percent from the field and wereoutrebounded, 46-26.
Jason Collins scored nine of Stanford's first 11 points, hittinga layup, a hook shot and five free throws as the Cardinal racedto an 11-2 lead in the first 3:14. Jarron positioned himself atthe free throw line and lobbed down low to Jason, whooverpowered 6-9, 235-pound Modibo Diarra and 6-11, 215-poundEarl Barron inside.
But despite a major disparity in free throws, Stanford held justa 40-30 halftime lead. The Cardinal converted 21-of-26 freethrows opposed to Memphis, which hit all four of its attempts atthe line.
Stanford scored the first eight points of the second half,opening a 48-30 advantage. Jacobsen led the run with a3-pointer and a jumper.
The Cardinal pulled away down the stretch, leading by as many as25 points.
