STANFORD, Calif. - Jason Collins tied his career-high with 19 points,and his twin brother Jarron added 12 points and 12 rebounds as No. 4 Stanfordbeat UC Riverside 84-41 Wednesday night.
Playing in a half-full Maples Pavilion against a team that joined Division Ijust last season, the Cardinal were never tested in their first game sincewinning the Puerto Rico Shootout. The Cardinal beat Old Dominion, Memphis andGeorgia on consecutive days last weekend in Bayamon.
Stanford (5-0) took a 14-3 lead in the first five minutes, led by 20 pointsa few minutes later and didn't let the lead drop below 28 points in the secondhalf. The Cardinal never trailed in running their home non-conference record to31-1 since 1995 and beating the Highlanders (1-4) for the fourth straight time.
Jason Collins showed no ill effects from his sore right knee and had 11rebounds. Three times, the brothers attempted to tip offensive rebounds to eachother to create another shot.
Both had double-doubles in the same game for the second time in theircareers.
Mike McDonald had 12 points for Stanford, and reserve Teyo Johnson added 11as the Cardinal outrebounded the Highlanders 47-26.
Jason Labagh and Aaron Hands each had six points to lead Riverside, whichhad no chance to mount an inside game against Stanford's bigger, tallerplayers.
Stanford plays just once more - on Saturday night at Long Beach State -before the Stanford Invitational on Dec. 18-19, when the Cardinal will likelyface Georgia Tech in the championship game. On Dec. 21, Stanford facestop-ranked Duke in the Pete Newell Challenge at Oakland Arena.
The Cardinal began the second half with an 18-7 run, and Casey Jacobsen'sfirst 3-pointer of the game with 14:30 to play gave Stanford a 63-26 lead.
The Stanford student body kept itself amused by chanting "We want TeenWolf!" in support of Riverside forward Mark Vanta, who has long hair, longsideburns and a soul patch underneath his mouth.
Stanford backup center Curtis Borchardt didn't play because of a bone chipon his toe.
