BERKELEY, Calif. - Stanford's Scott Leber scored off a header with just 1:41 remaining in the first overtime to give the No. 1-ranked Cardinal men's soccer team a 1-0 victory over No. 4 Indiana. The match was played at Edwards Stadium in Berkeley as part of the Cal adidas-Legacy Classic.
The win was Stanford's season-high seventh in a row and its first in seven chances against Indiana. The Cardinal, which is tied for first place in the Pac-10 at 5-1-0, is now 15-1-1 overall. The Hoosiers, who had a 10-game winning come to an end, are now 13-4-0.
Entering the game, Stanford was No. 1 in the Soccer America rankings and Indiana No. 4, however, according to the College Soccer Online media poll, the Hoosiers were No. 1 while the Cardinal was No. 2. Thus, today proved to be matchup between two No. 1's.
The winning sequence began off a Stanford counterattack. Sophomore defender Todd Dunivant sent a long ball into the middle of the box, where it bounced once and high into the air. Leber out-leapt onrushing Indiana goalkeeper Colin Rogers and headed the ball high into the back of the net for his third game-winning goal of the year, tied for tops on the team. Leber now has a club-high 12 goals overall, becoming the first Cardinal player to reach a dozen since Ricky Goad in 1993.
Indiana had the first two scoring opportunities of overtime, however, Stanford keeper Adam Zapala twice stymied the Hoosiers. In the 97th minute, Indiana had a two-on-one breakaway just inside the box, but Zapala rushed out to make a sliding save of Marcus Chorvat's shot. In the 103rd minute, Pat Noonan drilled a shot from the right side, but Zapala again made the save before starting the counter that would produce the game-winner.
Zapala, a senior, made a total of four saves on the day en route to his 14th shutout of the year and the 50th blanking of his illustrious career.
The ninety minutes of regulation was an even battle, with both teams having only a handful of scoring chances. Stanford's best opportunity came in the 68th minute, however, Roger Levesque's shot from inside the box sailed wide.
Stanford is next in action on Friday, Nov. 10, when it returns to Pac-10 play with a 2:00 p.m. road game at UCLA. The Cardinal ends the 2000 regular season next Sunday, Nov. 12, when it plays host to Oregon State at New Maloney Field.
