STANFORD, Calif. - SMU forward Mohamed Fahim scored a pair of second-half goals, including the game-winner at 80:06, as the Mustangs rallied from a 1-0, halftime deficit to upset Stanford 2-1 in an NCAA Quarterfinal match at New Maloney Field. The game was played before 2,854 fans, shattering the old New Maloney attendance record by 1,002. The previous record of 1,852 was set in a women's match against Cal Poly on Nov. 14, 1999.
SMU, the No. 6 seed in the Men's College Cup, advances to the national semifinals with a record of 20-4-0. Stanford, the No. 3 seed, ends its season at 18-3-1. The 18 victories matches the 1998 Cardinal squad for the most single-season wins in school history.
After Stanford held a 1-0 lead at halftime, SMU tied the score on a 35-yard shot by Mohamed Fahim to the near post at 65:22. The Mustangs then went ahead with under 10 minutes to play on Fahim's second strike. The sequence began when Carl Bussey fed Luchi Gonzalez, who took a shot that was stopped by Cardinal goalkeeper Adam Zapala. However, the ball deflected off Zapala and to Fahim, who converted off the rebound.
Stanford had several scoring chances over the final five minutes, however, Scott Leber's header was saved by Mustang keeper Byron Foss, Corey Woolfolk's shot was headed off the goal line by SMU defender Diego Walsh and Sean Sylvis' shot sailed high.
The Cardinal scored the game's first goal at the 18:34 mark. Aaron Biddle sent a cross from the right side that Woolfolk headed to Derek Shanahan, who drilled a one-time volley into the back of the net.
Foss finished with six saves for SMU, while Zapala made a season-high seven saves for Stanford. SMU outshot Stanford 16-12, marking only the fourth time this year - and first at home - that the Cardinal had been outshot.
