AUSTIN, Texas - The Stanford women's swimming and diving team finished in second place with 529.5 points at the conclusion of the 2000 Texas Invitational on Sunday. UCLA came back from 21 points behind Stanford, which had led the event after each of the first two days, to win the meet. The Bruins finished with 553.5 points and used their depth to win the meet as UCLA individuals did not win a single event on Sunday. Host Texas finished in third place with 501.5 points, while Arizona was a close fourth with a three-day total of 495.5.
Freshman Tara Kirk was once again the highlight for the Cardinal as she captured the 200 breast with an NCAA "A" qualifying standard time of 2:12.24. Kirk had previously won the 100 breast on Saturday. Cardinal divers also finished in the top three spots in the platform diving competition. Senior Erin Sones captured the platform title with 438.30 points, while sophomore McKenze Murphy (434.75) was a close second and junior Alexis Sowa (373.55) finished third. The winning effort by Sones was also a new meet record. Senior Misty Hyman (1:56.33) and junior Shelly Ripple (1:58.71) both clocked NCAA "A" qualifying standard times in the 200 fly, finishing second and fourth, respectively.
