STANFORD, Calif. - Junior Rob Canales (San Jose, CA/Bellarmine Prep HS) set a deGuerre Pool record in the 200 yard Individual Medley to lead the sixth-ranked Cardinal (6-3 overall, 2-2 Pac-10) to a 137-106 win over fourth-ranked California (6-3, 2-2) on Saturday afternoon at deGuerre Pool.

Canales' 1:47.57 in the 200 IM broke the old pool record of 1:47.59 set by former Stanford standout Tom Wilkens in 1998. Canales' time was a provisional qualifying time for the NCAA Championships. The Bay Area native also recorded a provisional qualifying time of 1:59.37 en route to a victory in the the 200 yard breaststroke.

Stanford took control of the meet in the third event - the 200 yard freestyle - when it swept the top three positions. Freshman John Waters (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich HS) won the event in 1:37.96, followed by junior Adam Messner (Ann Arbor, MI/Dexter HS) in 1:38.00 and junior Clayton Jones (Coral Springs, FL/Princeton) in 1:39.67. The 1-2-3 finish gave Stanford a big early lead it would never relinquish.

The Golden Bears also set a pool record of their own in the 400 yard freestyle relay. Cal's team of Anthony Ervin (Valencia, CA/William Hart HS), Matt Macedo (San Jose, CA/Leland HS), Scott Greenwood (Glendale, CA/USC) and Bart Kizierowski (Warsaw, Poland/Mission Viejo HS) touched the wall in 2:56.02, breaking the old record of 2:56.67 set by Stanford in 1999.

Both teams return to action at the Pac-10 Championships on Mar. 2-4 in Federal Way, Washington, where Stanford will be looking for its 19th consecutive conference crown.
