Men's Tennis Routs #36 Indiana State, 7-1

Feb. 25, 2000

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky - Second-ranked Stanford University (6-0) advanced to the semifinals of the USATA/ITA National Men's Indoor Team Championships for the sixth time in the last seven years and 18th time overall with an easy 7-1 win over No. 36 Indiana State (7-2) on Friday afternoon at the Louisville Tennis Center.

The third-seeded Cardinal will meet No. 14 Tennessee (8-2) in the semifinals on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. (Pacific Time). The Volunteers upset top-ranked and second-seeded LSU 4-3 to advance to the semis.

Stanford jumped out a quick 2-0 lead over Indiana State by sweeping all three doubles matches, and never looked back. The ITA's top ranked doubles duo of senior Geoff Abrams (Newport Beach, CA/Newport Harbor HS) clinched one doubles point with an 8-5 win over Jonas Piibor (Oregro, Sweden) and Gareth Keating (Queensland, Australia), while juniors Ali Ansari (Houston, TX/Second Baptist HS) and Scotty Scott (Belvedere, CA/Pinewood HS) earned the second point with an 8-6 win over Greg Tranquada (Toronto, Ontario, Canada) and Nathan Crick (Melbourne, Australia) that wrapped up the Cardinal's doubles sweep.

Stanford then proceeded to win five of the six singles matches, including three in straight sets. Kim, the ITA second ranked singles player, and Abrams, the ITA's No. 6 singles player, posted straight set wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively, while Ansari continued his tear with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Tranquada at No. 6 singles. In his five dual appearances this season, Ansari has won every match in straight sets and lost just 21 games in the process. Scott later clinched the match with a 2-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-6) win over Henry Choi (Hamilton, Ontario, Canada) at No. 3 singles. Instead of a third-set, a match tiebreaker (first to 10, win by two) was played.
