LOUISVILLE, Kent. - Second-ranked Stanford University (7-0) defeated No. 14 Tennessee (8-3) 4-3 on Saturday afternoon to advance to the finals of the USTA/ITA Men's Teeam Indoor Championships at the Louisville Tennis Center. The Cardinal, which has won 10 team indoor titles in the 25-year history of the event, will face Pac-10 rival and seventh-ranked UCLA (10-1) in the championship match on Sunday at 10:00 a.m. (Pacific time).
For the second time this week, it was Cardinal freshman David Martin (Key Biscayne, FL/Boca Raton Prep) who clinched the match. On Saturday, Martin (No. 87 by the ITA), who also clinched Thursday's 4-3 win over No. 8 Illinois, defeated the Volunteers' Adam Carey (Brisbane, Australia/St. Joseph's College) 6-4, 6-3. The win avenged Martin's three-set loss (7-5, 6-7, 6-2) to the 44th-ranked Carey in the qualifying round of the ITA All-American Championships on Oct. 13. Martin is now 3-0 on the weekend, and 14-6 overall this season.
Also in singles action, the Cardinal's No. 1 and No. 2 players - junior Alex Kim (Potomac, MD/Winston Churchill HS) and senior Geoff Abrams (Newport Beach, CA/Newport Harbor HS) recorded straight set wins. Kim, who is ranked No. 2 by the ITA and is now 22-3 on the season, defeated Tate Roberts (Albuquerque, New Mexico/Australia) in the No. 1 match when Roberts retired down 6-2, 5-3. Abrams, the ITA's sixth ranked singles player, improved to 22-6 this season with a 6-3, 7-5 victory over 28th-ranked Mark Parsons (St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada/Bradenton Academy).
Stanford also won the doubles point for the third time in as many matches this weekend. Stanford's No. 1 team of Kim and Abrams - the top-ranked doubles teams in the country - beat Carey and Parsons 8-2, while freshmen Scott Lipsky (Merrick, NY/Bellinore-Kennedy HS) and Martin clicnhed the doubles point with an 8-5 win over Mark Fitpatrick (Melbourne, Australia/Keilow Downs Secondary) and Paul Podbury (Melbourne, Australia/Xavier College).
