LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Stanford won the 400-meter freestyle relay to end the meet, clinching a 128-115 victory over sixth-ranked USC at the USC McDonald's Swim Stadium Saturday afternoon. The fifth-ranked Cardinal improved to 5-3 overall and 2-1 in the Pac-10, while the Trojans fell to 5-2, 2-2.
Freshman John Waters (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich HS) and junior Adam Messner (Ann Arbor, MI/Dexter HS) went 1-2, 0.01 seconds apart, in the 200-meter free to get Stanford rolling. Junior Steven Brown (Reno, NV/Reno HS) won the 200-meter butterfly in an automatic NCAA Qualifying time, and freshman Randall Bal (Fair Oaks, CA/Bella Vista HS), freshman Dan Westcott (The Woodlands, TX/The Woodlands HS) and junior Rob Canales (San Jose, CA/Bellarmine Prep) went 1-2-3 in the 200-meter backstroke to put the Cardinal ahead for good. Stanford led 115-111 going into the final relay, and took first and third, winning the race by more than a second.
Stanford also got a big boost from freshman Gavin Olmstead (Seahurst, WA/Mt. Ranier HS), who won both the one-meter and three-meter diving, contested a week earlier at the UCLA Diving Invitational.
Stanford returns to action at deGuerre Pool for the final dual meet of the season on Saturday, Feb. 19, hosting No. 4 California at noon.
