Men's Tennis Defeats No. 37 BYU, 6-1

STANFORD, Calif. - The third-ranked Stanford men's tennis team (10-0) returned from a three-week finals break to defeat No. 37 BYU (9-4) 6-1 on Tuesday afternoon at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium.

The match of the day was at No. 1 doubles, where two of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's top 10 teams in the nation did battle. In that match, top-ranked Geoff Abrams (Newport Beach, CA/Newport Harbor HS) and Alex Kim (Potomac, MD/Winston Churchill HS) defeated ninth-ranked Damien Ward (Canaberra, ACT, Australia) and Gert Vilms (Tallin, Estonia) 8-6.

Abrams and Kim are now 22-2 on the season, and a perfect 5-0 against top 10 opposition.At No. 2 doubles, Stanford juniors Ali Ansari (Houston, TX/Second Baptist HS) and Scotty Scott (Belvedere, CA/Pinewood HS) upset the 25th-ranked doubles team of Nic Losee (Provo, Utah) and Carlos Lozano (Tlalnepantla, Mexico) 8-4.

The Cardinal also won five of the six singles matches, highlighted by easy wins from Kim and Abrams. Kim, who is ranked second in the nation by the ITA, beat Vilms 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 and the 15th-ranked Abrams handled Ward 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2. Kim is now 25-3 on the season and 9-1 in duals, while Abrams improved to 25-6 and 8-2. In the lone three-set match, Scott (ITA No. 77) outlasted Losee 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 at No. 3.

Earlier in the day, Stanford's three-week run at No. 1 came to an end when it fell two slots in the latest WingspanBank.com Collegiate Team Rankings. UCLA (14-2) jumped from No. 3 to No. 1, while Florida (12-2) moved from No. 4 to No. 2 and Stanford slipped from No. 1 to No. 3. The Cardinal and Bruins will meet twice in the final three weeks of the season, as UCLA travels to The Farm on Apr. 7 and Stanford visits Westwood on Apr. 22.

Stanford continues this nine-match, 22-day homestand this weekend when it hosts No. 33 Clemson on Friday at 1:30 p.m. and #48 California on Saturday at noon. Both matches will be held at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium.
