MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Juniors Adam Messner (Ann Arbor, MI/Dexter HS) and Steven Brown (Reno, NV/Reno HS) recorded fifth-place finishes to lead No. 3 Stanford to fifth place after the first of three days at the 2000 NCAA Men's Swimming & Diving Championships, held at the University Aquatic Center. A prelude to the U.S. Olympic Trials, the meet produced numerous fast times, including three world records on the first day.
Messner placed fifth in the 400-meter freestyle in a time of 3:46.07. Brown placed fifth in the 200-meter individual medley, finishing in 1:58.52. Other individual scorers for the Cardinal on the first day of the meet included junior Rob Canales (San Jose, CA/Bellarmine Prep), who was 10th in the 200-meter IM (1:58.80) and junior Anthony Robinson (Houston, TX/ Memorial HS), who was 16th in the 50-meter free. The Cardinal also was sixth in both relays, the 200-meter free relay and the 400-meter medley relay.
Top-ranked Texas opened up a good lead on the first day of the meet and, along with defending champion Auburn, opened a substantial gap on the rest of the field. Pac-10 teams round out the top six in the team standings.
The NCAA Championships continue Friday with the 200 medley relay, the 400 IM, the 100 fly, the 200 free, the 100 breast, the 100 back, the three-meter diving and the 800 free relay. The meet concludes Saturday with the 1500 free, the 200 back, the 100 free, the 200 breast, the 200 fly, platform diving and the 400 free relay.
