Men's Tennis Beats Cal - Again

STANFORD, Calif. - The third-ranked Stanford men's tennis team completed a season sweep over arch-rival California with a 6-1 victory on Saturday afternoon at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium. The Cardinal (12-0) also defeated the Golden Bears (6-4) 5-2 on Mar. 1 in Berkeley.

Stanford won five of the six singles matches to improve to 3-0 on its current nine-match homestand. Stanford junior Alex Kim (Potomac, MD/Winston Churchill HS), who is currently ranked No. 2 in the nation by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, improved to 27-3 with an easy 6-1, 6-2 win over 59th-ranked Erik Dmytruk (Edmonton, Alberta/Plamer Prep). Kim is also 12-3 this season against opponents ranked in the ITA top 100.

And for the second straight day, Stanford received an impressive three-set win from Ryan Haviland (Sumter, SC/Sumter HS) at No. 6 singles. Haviland dropped the first set to Cal's Scott Kintz (San Diego, CA/The Bishop's School) 6-2, but rebounded to win the next two sets 6-4, 6-3 to improve to 5-1 on the season.

Stanford's No. 1 doubles team of Geoff Abrams (Newport Beach, CA/Newport Harbor HS) and Kim, who are currently the top-ranked doubles team in the country according to the ITA, posted their third win over a top 25 opponent in the last four days. Abrams and Kim improved to 24-2 on the season by beating 23rd-ranked Dmytruk and Kintz 8-3.

Freshman Robert Kowalczyk (Vero Beach, FL/Vera Beach HS) accounted for Cal's point with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 over David Martin (Key Biscayne, FL/Boca Raton Prep).

Stanford returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts No. 61 Harvard at 1:30 p.m. at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium. The Golden Bears will then host Harvard on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. in Berkeley.
