Honolulu, HI -- Despite the offensive efforts of freshman middle blocker Curt Toppel and sophomore outside hitter Marcus Skacel, the 13th-ranked Stanford men's volleyball team fell to sixth-ranked Hawaii 16-14, 15-13, 15-13 in a two hour and 42 minute match in front of 5,335 fans at the Stan Sheriff Center. The Cardinal dropped to 8-8 (7-6 MPSF) for the season, while Hawaii improved to 11-8 (6-6 MPSF) and a game closer in the battle for the third playoff spot in the MPSF Pacific Division.
Toppel, the nation's leading attacker, recorded 42 kills on 78 attempts, as the Cardinal recorded a season-high 119 kills. Skacel had a career night, tallying 34 kills on 52 attacks for a .500 hitting percentage.
Junior setter Josh Lukens had a season-high 106 assists for the Cardinal and added 12 digs and four kills in the match. Freshman outside hitter Billy Strickland recorded a double-double on the night with 12 kills and 14 digs.
Hawaii had five players that recorded more than 10 kills, led by Torry Tukuafu's 39. Stefan Krejci has 110 assists for the Rainbows, while Russell Lockwood dug 18 Stanford attacks.
