STANFORD, Calif. - The third-ranked Stanford University men's tennis team improved to 14-0 with a 7-0 win over No. 48 Arizona (8-6) on Friday afternoon at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium. The Cardinal has won 36 straight over the Wildcats dating back to 1982, and leads the all-time series 43-1.
Stanford opened the afternoon by sweeping all three doubles matches to win the first point. At No. 1 doubles, Stanford's Geoff Abrams (Newport Beach, CA/Newport Harbor HS) and Alex Kim (Potomac, MD/Winston Churchill HS), who have been the No. 1 ranked doubles team in the nation since December, had to rally to win their 27th match in 31 tries this season. Abrams and Kim trailed unranked Jean-Noel LaCoste (Stockholm, Sweden/Ostra Real) and Michel Stopa (Paris, France/Tyler JC) 4-2, but the Cardinal duo rallied to win six of the final eight games and win 8-6.
The Cardinal also swept all six singles matches, including four in straight sets. At No. 5 singles, Stanford junior Ali Ansari (Houston, TX/Second Baptist HS) fell behind Caleb Marquardt (Fruita, CO/Fruita HS) 3-0 in the first set, but rallied to win the next six games of the opening set and 12 of the next 16 overall to win 6-3, 6-4. Ansari is now 10-3 in dual matches this season, and has won four of his last five. At No. 1 singles, Kim - the third-ranked singles player in the nation - outlasted 89th-ranked Alex Aybar (Dominican Republic/Tyler JC) 6-2, 3-6, 7-5. Kim, who trailed 4-3 in the third set before winning four of the final five games, is 29-3 overall this season.
Stanford wraps up Deutsche Banc Alex. Brown's "Fan Appreciation Weekend" on Saturday when it hosts No. 56 Arizona State (5-7) at 1:30 at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium. The Cardinal then continues its nine-match homestand next weekend with the Bank of the West "Stanford Challenge."
