#1 Stanford Beats #9 Arizona State, 7-1

STANFORD, Calif. --- The top-ranked Stanford women's tennis team improved to 23-0 and 15-0 against top 25 opposition with a 7-1 Pac-10 win over 9th-ranked Arizona State (11-7, 3-4) on Friday afternoon at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium.

The Cardinal also improved to 6-0 in the Pac-10, and leads both California and UCLA by one game with two remaining. Stanford, who already owns Pac-10 wins over the Bruins, Golden Bears and Arizona hosts No. 11 USC on Friday at 1:30 p.m. and No. 8 UCLA on Saturday at noon at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium. The two matches will closeout the Cardinal regualr season. Stanford won five of the six singles matches, including four in straight sets. Second-ranked sophomore Marissa Irvin (Santa Monica, CA) got pushed to three sets for only the second time in 16 matches by ASU's Alison Bradshaw, who is ranked 15th by the ITA. Irvin went onto defeat Bradshaw by a score of 3-6, 6-1, 6-1. Irvin, whose world ranking of No. 85 is the highest of any amateur in the world, is now 16-0 on the season.

Ninth-ranked Lauren Kalvaria (Indialantic, FL) won in straight sets, improving to 32-7 with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Faye Devera of Arizona State in No. 3 singles. The Cardinal also received straight set wins from 82nd-ranked Gabriela Lastra (Reno, NV) at No. 4, Jennifer Heiser (Stockton, CA) at No. 5 and Keiko Tokuda (Clifton, NJ) at No. 6.

Thirty-sixth ranked Karin Palme picked up ASU's lone singles win with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over 47th-ranked Teryn Ashley (Chestnut Hills, MA) at No. 2 singles.

The Cardinal won both doubles matches, highlighted by Kalvaria and Lastra's victory over 23rd-ranked Bradshaw and McConly, 8-6, at No. 1. Lastra and Kalvaria are ranked No. 37 by the ITA. The No. 3 doubles match was not played.
