Santa Barbara, Calif. -- The Stanford men's volleyball team (10-12, 9-10 MPSF) fell in its final regular season match of the season 13-15, 15-7, 17-15, 15-13 to UC Santa Barbara (12-13, 9-7 MPSF) yesterday at the Thunderdome. The Cardinal will, however, begin Mountain Pacific Sports Federation tournament play on Saturday at Pepperdine.
Freshman Curt Toppel (Pacific Palisades, CA) led the Cardinal with 39 kills in the match and was supported by sophomore Marcus Skacel's (Laguna Niguel, CA) 31 kills. Skacel also led the Cardinal with 12 digs, while junior Josh Lukens (San Diego, CA) had a team-high 107 assists.
The Cardinal reached the eight-team MPSF tournament as an at-large selection and face a team in the Waves that defeated Stanford in four games at Maples Pavilion on February 17.b
