Malibu, Calif. -- The 11th-ranked Stanford men's volleyball team (10-13) fell 15-10, 15-8, 14-16, 13-15, 15-13 to second-ranked Pepperdine (21-4) in the first round of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament at the Firestone Fieldhouse. The lose concludes Stanford's 2000 season.
Freshman middle blocker Curt Toppel led the Cardinal with 35 kills, which marked the 11th time this season he has eclipsed the 30-kill plateau. In all, the Cardinal had four players record 10 or more kills, including freshmen outside hitters Jon Palacios and Billy Strickland with 13 and sophomore outside hitter Marcus Skacel had 11.
Junior setter Josh Lukens, the nation's leader in assists per game, had 84 assists for the match, while Toppel led the team with 14 digs.
Stanford and Pepperdine had played a four-game match earlier this season that the Waves won 15-10, 14-16, 15-11, 15-12.
