STANFORD, Calif. - Junior outside hitter Marcus Skacel hit .647, pounded 12 kills, posted five digs and had five total blocks to lead the No. 5-ranked Stanford men's volleyball team to a 30-18, 30-26, 30-22 exhibition victory over visiting Arizona at Maples Pavilion.
Stanford featured a balanced attack for the second straight match, as senior Brett Youngberg had eight kills with a .538 hitting percentage while sophomore Curt Toppel had a nine-kill, seven-dig effort. Sophomore libero Seth Ring had an outstanding match with six digs, while senior setter Josh Lukens added 34 assists and four digs.
Kevin Jones, Chris Kosty and Vince Rooney all had 11 kills for Arizona, while Kosty added a match-high eight digs. Setter Jeff Grobe handed out 35 assists with five digs.
Game one belonged to the Cardinal in convincing fashion, as the home team posted a .552 hitting percentage (17 kills, 1 error, 29 total attempts) en route to a 30-18 victory. Arizona came back in game two, however, drawing within three at 29-26 before a service error gave the game to Stanford. Game three was more of the same, but in the end Stanford's .407 hitting percentage was the difference in a 30-22 Cardinal win. For the match, the Cardinal outhit Arizona .370 to .184.
Stanford, which opened the 2001 season with a 30-12, 30-16, 30-16 victory over D'Youville on Tuesday night, resumes regular season play on Sunday, January 14, when it hosts Ball State. First serve from Maples Pavilion is set for 3:00 p.m.
