No. 2 Men's Volleyball Sweeps Cal In Exhibition Match

STANFORD, Calif. - Sophomores Curt Toppel and William Curtis led the way with 16 and 12 kills, respectively, as No. 2 Stanford swept club team California 30-19, 30-21, 30-26 in an exhibition match at Maples Pavilion.

Stanford, which has hit better than .400 in four of its first five regular season matches, finished with a .412 hitting percentage tonight (50 k, 17 e, 80 ta). California hit just .130 (30 k, 20 e, 77 ta).

Toppel finished the match with 16 kills, a .520 hitting percentage, six digs and four blocks. Curtis hit .500 and contributed three digs. Sophomore Paul Bocage enjoyed an excellent night on both the offensive and defensive ends, posting eight kills with a .700 hitting percentage while recording six blocks (one solo). Freshman libero Doug Johnstone tallied a match-high eight digs in his first collegiate start.

Tonight's match also marked the return from injury of senior setter Brad Griffith. After sitting in game one, Griffith had a match-best 27 assists and three blocks over the final two games.

Four Cardinal players - Curtis, Seth Ring, Kyle Strache and Toppel - all had two service aces. Stanford outhit California .483 to .115 en route to a 30-19 game one out, took control late for a 30-21 game two victory, then hit .400 to win game three, 30-26.

Stanford returns to regular season action tomorrow night, Saturday, Feb. 3, when the Cardinal travels to UC Santa Cruz. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m.
