No. 15 Stanford Softball Sweeps Doubleheader With San Jose State

The 15th-ranked Stanford softball team swept a doubleheader with the San Jose State Spartans today at the Stanford Softball Complex. Game scores were 8-0 (5 innings) and 7-2. The Cardinal improve to 7-0 on the year, while the Spartans fall to 3-6.

In game one, Stanford jumped on the board early, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first. After shortstop Robin Walker walked to lead off the inning, Jessica Mendoza singled to center, putting Walker in scoring position. First baseman Sarah Beeson then tripled to center scoring Walker and Mendoza. The Cardinal would score one more in the third and break open the game with five runs in the fourth.

Sophomore Dana Sorensen pitched a complete game one-hitter for the Cardinal with 10 strikeouts. Beeson went 2-for-4 with four RBI while Mendoza had a 2-for-2 day at the plate with two runs scored. Third baseman Jenni Shideler went 1-for-2 with three RBI as well.

In game two, the Spartans took the early lead, scoring two runs in the top of the first. Stanford countered with a run in the bottom of the inning. The Cardinal took the 3-2 lead in the third inning, scoring two runs. Beeson would once again collect two RBI, knocking in Robin Walker and Ramona Shelburne with a single to centerfield. Stanford scored two more insurance runs in the fourth and sixth innings to seal the win.

Sophomore Jaime Forman-Lau picked up her first win of the season, pitching five innings, allowing three hits and two runs while striking out four. Tori Nyberg notched her first save of the season, pitching two scoreless innings. Beeson collected three RBI, going 2-for-2 at the plate while teammate Cassi Brangham had a 2-for-3 effort with a run scored and an RBI. Robin Walker went 3-for-4 with three runs scored while outfielder Jessica Draemel had two RBI on the afternoon.

Stanford heads to the Campbell/Cartier Classic in Poway, Calif. for a tournament next week. The Cardinal will have four straight weeks on the road before returning home for a doubleheader with Portland State on Saturday, March 24 at noon.
