SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Sophomore pitcher Dana Sorensen set a school record with 16 strikeouts as No. 15 Stanford defeated New Mexico 1-0 in the first game of the Cambpell/Cartier Classic at the Poway Sportsplex on Friday. In the second game, Sarah Beeson homered to give the Cardinal a 2-0 win over No. 11 Michigan. Stanford, which is off to its best start in school history, is 10-0 on the season.
In game one, Stanford's Cassi Brangham got a two-out single in the top of the seventh to score Jenni Shideler for the only run of the game. Kira Ching led off the inning with a deep drive to left center but New Mexico's Kelly Glass made a diving catch, knocking over the outfield fence. Shideler then reached on a walk and advanced to second on Jessica Allister's ground out. Brangham ran the count to 3-and-2 with two outs before driving a single to centerfield, scoring Shideler from second.
Game one was also a pitcher's dual between Sorensen and New Mexico's Marie Brady. Sorensen struck out the side four times and did not allow a runner past first base, while walking just one. Brady had two strikeouts and two walks and pitched out of jam in the fifth. Sorensen, who held the previous Stanford record with 15 strikeouts, has fanned at least 10 batters in four of five games. With the win, her record improves to 5-0 on the season. In the second game, Beeson gave Stanford the lead with a two-run homerun to right center in the fourth inning. Jessica Mendoza reached on a walk and stole second before scoring on Beeson's first homer of the season.
Maureen LeCocq pitched 5 1/3 innings of scoreless ball before running into a little trouble in the sixth. Michigan's Kim Bugel doubled and LeCocq walked the next two batters. But Jaime Forman-Lau came in and pitched out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam. She forced a line out to short and struck out Melinda Moulden to end Michigan's threat. Forman-Lau struck out two more Wolverines in the seventh to earn her third save of the year. LeCocq was credited with the win to improve her record to 3-0. The win over Michigan was the second in as many days as the Cardinal was a 2-1 winner on Thursday in a pre-tournament game.
Stanford continues tournament play on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. against Utah State and has a nightcap at 8:30 p.m. against No. 22 Long Beach State.
