ANN ARBOR, Mich. --Stanford (5-0) started the day off with an impressive 16-1 victory over Indiana at the Michigan Water Polo Invitational. Julie Gardner and Brenda Villa led the Cardinal with three goals each. Villa tacked on two more goals today as the Cardinal defeated its Michigan hosts 17-3. Margie Dingeldein recorded 4 goals leading Stanford past the Wolverines.
Stanford made a strong push to open competition this morning against the Hoosiers. Stanford put two quick goals on the board before Indiana scored its only goal during the first period. The Cardinal tallied six goals in the third quarter before advancing to a 16-1 final. The Cardinal returned to the pool to face the hosting Wolverines this afternoon and came away with a 17-3 win. Stanford jumped to a 3-0 lead with two goals from Dingeldein. Michigan challenged and put two goals up during the first quarter, but Stanford held them scoreless for the next 21:49 en route to the 17-3 victory.
Stanford resumes play tomorrow, Sun., Feb. 18 with a match against Slippery Rock and a rematch against Michigan. The Slippery Rock game is slated to begin at 8 a.m. ET and the Michigan game is scheduled to start at 11:45 a.m. ET.
