Federal Way, Wash. - Third-ranked Stanford won six of the eight events contested on the second day of the 2001 Pac-10 Women's Swimming and Diving Championships Friday at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center. Still, the Cardinal has suffered in the event as a team due to a lack of depth and managed to move up only one spot to fourth place in the team standings after two days of the three-day competition. Second-ranked Arizona moved into the lead as the Wildcats have posted a two-day point total of 795. USC, the leader after the first day, has fallen to second with 771.5 points followed by UCLA (766) and Stanford (702).
2000 Olympic Gold Medal winner Misty Hyman and freshman standout Tara Kirk and once again highlighted the Cardinal individual efforts. Hyman won both the 100 butterfly with a new Pac-10 meet record time of 51.83 and the 100 backstroke (53.52), both marks meeting NCAA "A" Qualifying Standards. Kirk also set a new Pac-10 meet record with a time of 59.58 on her way to the individual title in the 100 breaststroke. Lauren Thies was Stanford's other individual winner, capturing the 200 freestyle in 1:46.36. The marks by both Kirk and Thies also met NCAA "A" Qualifying Standards.
Stanford's final two victories came in the 200 medley relay and the 800 freestyle relay. The Cardinal set a new Pac-10 meet record in the 800 freestyle relay as a team of Shelly Ripple, Hyman, Jessica Foschi and Thies recorded a time of 7:10.28. A squad consisting of Haley Champion, Kirk, Hyman and Ripple recorded a mark of 1:39.58 in the 200 medley relay. Both marks met NCAA "A" Qualifying Standards.
The only two non-Stanford competitors to win events were USC's Michala Kwansy in the 400 individual medley (4:16.41) and Kellie Brennan in the 3-meter diving competition (516.90).
Stanford concludes its competition at the Pac-10 Championships on Saturday.
