Federal Way, Wash. - Third-ranked Stanford finished fourth at the 2001 Pac-10 Women's Swimming and Diving Championships held at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center. Freshman standout Tara Kirk set new records for the Pac-10, the Pac-10 meet and Stanford with a time of 2:08.54 in the 200 breaststroke. Misty Hyman set a new Pac-10 meet record in the 200 butterfly (1:55.25), while Erin Sones (platform diving, 491.30 points) and Jessica Foschi (1500 freestyle, 16:05.68) also won individual events for Stanford. All of the winners' marks met NCAA "A" Qualifying Standards.
Stanford athletes won 13 of the 21 events contested during the three-day meet, including four of seven on Saturday's final day, but the Cardinal was hurt by a lack of depth. Arizona won the meet with a three-day total of 1229.5 points, followed by UCLA (1130), USC (1099.5), Stanford (1033.5), California (942.5), Arizona State (784), Washington State (432), Washington (365) and Oregon State (285).
Saturday's non-Stanford winners included California's Natalie Coughlin in the 200 backstroke (1:52.73) and Haley Cope in the 100 freestyle (49.27). Arizona won the 400 freestyle relay with a mark of 3:18.39. All were NCAA "A" Qualifying Standards.Stanford will compete at the Federal Way Invitational on Sunday before beginning preparation for the NCAA Championships (March 15-17) to be held in Long Island, New York.
