STANFORD, Calif. - No. 15 Stanford (3-0) pounded out 13 hits en route to a 12-1 victory in game one, then received a combined shutout from Maureen LeCocq and Jamie Forman-Lau to win the nightcap 3-0 and sweep a doubleheader from visiting Santa Clara (0-4).

After Santa Clara took a 1-0, first inning lead in the opener, Stanford scored in every inning to romp 12-1 in a game shortened to five innings. The Cardinal scored one in the first, five in the second, four in the third and two in the fourth. A sacrifice fly by Jessica Mendoza tied the game 1-1 in the first inning, then Stanford struck for five runs on five hits in the second. Freshman Michelle Thiry delivered the big blow with her first collegiate hit, a one-out, two-run homer off Deanna Rodriguez (0-1) to put the Cardinal ahead 3-1.

Jenni Shideler, Robin Walker, Ramona Shelburne and Mendoza all drove in runs during a four-run third inning. In the fourth, freshman Jessica Allister doubled in a run for her first career hit and RBI, then Shideler ripped a RBI double to cap a 3-for-3 game. Stanford starter Dana Sorensen (1-0) struck out five in four innings for the win.

The nightcap developed into a pitchers' duel between LeCocq and Santa Clara starter Krista Barry. LeCocq (1-0) allowed just two singles over five scoreless innings while recording all 15 outs via the groundout. Barry (0-2) went the distance, allowing three runs (all earned) on seven hits. Forman-Lau fanned three over the final two innings and escaped a two-on, no-out jam in the seventh to earn the save.

Stanford scored single runs in the second, third and fifth innings. With two out and two on in the second, Walker drilled a single to left, plating Shideler for a 1-0 Cardinal lead. Stanford manufactured a run in the second on a walk, stolen base and two fly outs, the last a sacrifice fly by Kira Ching. Sarah Beeson's RBI-double in the fifth gave Stanford a 3-0 advantage.

For the day, Shideler was 5-for-6 with two doubles and three RBI, while Allister was 3-for-3 and Mendoza drove in three runs.

Santa Clara's Tess Nesbitt was 4-for-4 with a run scored, getting a pair of hits in each game.

The Cardinal returns to action next Saturday, Feb. 10, when it hosts Pacific in a doubleheader beginning at 12 noon.
