ST. GEORGE, Utah - Sophomore Maureen LeCocq pitched a three-hit shutout as the No. 6 Stanford softball team defeated UC Santa Barbara 2-0 on Friday afternoon in the second game of the Red Desert Classic, hosted by University of Utah at The Canyons. The Cardinal moves to 18-1-1, while the Gauchos fall to 6-9.
The Cardinal got on the board in the bottom of the first inning. Robin Walker led off with a walk and stole second before a Sarah Beeson single drove her in.
The score remained 1-0 until the bottom of the sixth when Jessica Mendoza hit her team-leading sixth home run of the year. She drove the 1-0 offering over the 200-foot center field fence, giving Stanford a 2-0 lead.
LeCocq earned her second shutout of the year and improves her record to 6-0. She struck out six and walked one in her second complete game of the year.
The Cardinal continues play in the Red Desert Classic against No. 17 Nebraska at 4:00 p.m. (MST).
