GAME NOTES

  • This was the third meeting between Stanford and Cincinnati. Aftertonight's Cardinal win, the Bearcats lead the series 2-1 having won thefirst two meetings with the Cardinal 60-49 in 1968-69 and 80-46 in 1969-70.

  • This is Stanford's tenth NCAA Tournament appearance. The Cardinal is 16-8in the tourney.
  • This is the third time Stanford has reached the Sweet-16 under head coachMike Montgomery. In 1997 the Cardinal lost in the semifinals, 82-77, toUtah. In 1998 the Cardinal advanced to the Final Four by defeating Purdue,67-59, and Rhode Island, 79-77, in the Midwest Regional in St. Louis.
  • This is the second time Stanford has reached the NCAA Tournament regionalfinal under coach Mike Montgomery. The Cardinal advanced to the Final Fourin 1998 by winning the NCAA Tournament Midwest Regional.
  • Sophomore Casey Jacobsen tied the Stanford single-season record forthree-pointers with his second trey of the night. He now has 82 on theseason. He is tied with Dion Cross who also knocked down 82 treys duringthe 1994-95 campaign.
  • Jacobsen posted a new career-high with 27 points tonight. His previouscareer-high was 26 points against New Hampshire on Dec. 19, 1999 and againstDuke on Dec. 21, 2000.
  • Senior Ryan Mendez registered his 1,000th career point with his firstbucket of the night.
  • Only six times have the Cardinal trailed at halftime. They now have a 5-1mark in those contests, after trailing 38-34 at halftime of tonight'scontest. Their lone loss was to UCLA who defeated the Cardinal, 79-73, atMaples Pavilion. The largest halftime deficit that Stanford overcame thisseason was 13 points to Duke. Stanford defeated Duke in the Pete NewellClassic, 84-83.
  • Stanford shot 62.8% (27-for-43) from the floor in the win tonight,including 65.2% (15-for-23) in the second half.
  • Jacobsen became the sixth Cardinal to post over 600 points in asingle-season. He currently stands at 602 points. Next up on the Cardinalsingle-season list is Keith Jones (1983-84) at 619 points.
  • Ryan Mendez, who leads the nation in free-throw percentage, was 2-for-2from the line tonight to raise his percentage to 94.8% (92-for-97). He hasmade 14 consecutive free throws.
