STANFORD, Calif. - The No. 1-ranked Stanford women's water polo team overcame an early deficit to defeat No. 5 San Jose State 9-5 on Saturday night in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation game at the Avery Aquatic Center. With the win, the Cardinal improves to 15-0 overall and 4-0 in the MPSF while the Spartans drop to 9-8 overall and 2-3 in conference play.
The Spartans jumped out to an early 2-1 lead midway through the first quarter and led 3-2 after the first seven minutes of play. Christy Taylor, Erin Kelly and Inna Fedoseyeva all tallied first quarter goals for the Spartans. Both of Stanford's first quarter scores came on power play opportunities. Senior Kris Koblik scored the first goal of the game while senior Kelly Shouey had the other score in the first.
The Cardinal came back with two goals in the second quarter - one from freshman Brenda Villa and the other from sophomore Julie Gardner. San Jose State's Neva West added a goal with three minutes remaining in the first half to even the score at 4-4 at the break.
In the third quarter, the Spartans regained the lead with a 6-on-5 goal at the 5:13 mark. Stanford's Ellen Estes was ejected, setting up Erin Kelly's second goal of the night for a 5-4 Spartan lead.
Stanford, which was playing for the first time in 13 days, evened the score on a Brenda Villa penalty shot. Thirty seconds later, the Cardinal took the lead for good on Kelly Shouey's counterattack goal.
The final quarter belonged to Stanford as Villa scored her third goal of the night and Estes and junior Margie Dingeldein also tallied goals.
In the goal, Stanford sophomore Jackie Frank was solid, recording nine saves. San Jose State's Melanie Nichols notched three saves in the net.
The Cardinal is next in action on Monday, March 26 at 7:00 p.m. when it hosts MPSF foe Hawaii.
