March 26, 2001

STANFORD, Calif. - The No. 1-ranked Stanford women's water polo team scored four goals in the first quarter and never looked back as the Cardinal defeated University of Hawaii 10-3 Monday night in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation game at Avery Aquatic Center. The win moves Stanford to 16-0 overall and 5-0 in MPSF play while the Wahine fall to 14-5 (1-4 MPSF).

The Cardinal scored five of its goals on power play opportunities, three of which came in the first half. At the 5:34 mark in the first quarter, junior Ellen Estes converted her first goal of the night on a 6-on-5 score. Junior Margie Dingeldein and sophomore Julie Gardner recorded goals in the first as well. Then with :01 second left in the opening quarter, senior Hilary Gallogly tallied a 6-on-5 goal for a 4-0 Stanford lead. Freshman Brenda Villa extended the lead with an early second quarter goal before Gardner scored again, this time on a power play goal.

The Wahine, which defeated UC Santa Cruz earlier today, got on the board with :52 seconds left in the first half when junior Christa Bardecki scored her first goal of the night. Senior Amy Morrow tallied a score in the third quarter and Bardecki added another goal in the fourth on a power play opportunity.

Stanford came out strong in the second half as freshman Lauren Faust scored just more than one minute into the half. Gardner also found the back of the net in the third. The fourth quarter was more of the same as Estes and Gardner both recorded scores.

In the goal, Stanford sophomore Jackie Frank registered four saves through three quarters of play before senior Alli Henry notched two saves in the fourth. Hawaii's Christa Tackaberry had four saves on the night.

The Cardinal is next in action this weekend when it travels to Southern California for two MPSF games. On Friday, March 30, Stanford takes on No. 10 San Diego State at 3:00 before traveling to No. 8 Long Beach State for a noon match on Saturday.
