Men's Volleyball Falls To Hawaii In Three Games

HONOLULU, Hawaii - The sixth-ranked University of Hawaii men's volleyball team (10-3 overall, 6-2 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) hit .400 (55 k-13 e-105 ta) as a team en route to a 30-25, 30-28, 30-25 win over fifth-ranked Stanford University (8-3, 5-3) 30-25, 30-28, 30-25 late Friday night at the Stan Sheriff Center.

The Cardinal and the Warriors will face off again on Saturday night in a 10:00 p.m. (PT) non-conference match at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Sophomore Curt Toppel (Pacific Palisades, CA/Loyola HS) led the Cardinal with 20 kills and a .417 hitting percentage (20 k-4 e-36 ta) to go along with a team-high eight digs. Junior Marcus Skacel (Laguna Niguel, CA/Santa Margarita HS) added nine kills, six digs, four assists and three service aces.

Costas Theocharidis led Hawaii with 26 kills, eight blocks and a .458 hitting percentage (26 k-4 e-48 ta).

All three games were close throughout. The Warriors closed out game by scoring five of the final seven points. In game two, Hawaii pulled out the two-point win with a .314 hitting percentage (16 k-5 e-35 ta), while holding the Cardinal to just a .121 mark (12 k-8 e-33 ta). In the third and final game, Hawaii broke a 17-17 tie with consecutive service aces by Eyal Zimet, and went on to hold the lead the rest of the way.
