Cardinal Men Finish Second, Women Third At Brutus Hamilton Relays

BERKELEY, Calif. -

Michael Ponikvar qualified provisionally for the NCAA Outdoor Championships with a winning effort of 7-3 to highlight Stanford's activities at the Brutus Hamilton Relays on Saturday at Edwards Stadium/Goldman Field.

Ponikvar, who redshirted last year to train for the Olympics for Canada, surpassed his previous season-best of 7-2 1/4 at the Razorback Invitational in January.

Another NCAA provisional qualifier was Milton Little, who won the long jump competition with a career-best of 25-4 3/4, the fifth-best leap in school history. Little easily surpassed his previous best of 23-5 set last year as a freshman.

In all, five Stanford men's competitiors won their events with five others placing second or third.

Stanford's men's team finished second in the seven-team competition with 144.5 points. Cal won with 152 points.

Three Cardinal women's competitors won top honors while six others either placed second or third. Sophomore Kimberly Stone won the high jump and qualified provisionally for the NCAA's with a career-best leap of 5-10 1/2 (fourth-best in school history). Maurica Carlucci qualified for the Pac-10 Championships later this year at Berkeley with a first place time of 4:25.46 in the 1,500 meters. Freshman Lindsay Johnson won the 100 meter hurdles (14.10).

Stanford women's team finished third in the seven-team competition with 136 points compared to 165.5 for first place California.
