SEATTLE, Wash. - No. 13 Washington scored two runs in the third and held on for a 3-2 win over the No. 3 Stanford softball team in Pacific-10 Conference action on Friday afternoon at Husky Softball Stadium. The Huskies improve to 32-17 overall and 6-6 in the Pac-10 while the Cardinal falls to 44-7-1 and 9-4 in conference play.
Washington's winning run came on an interesting two-out hit in the third. With Kelly Hauxhurst on second base, UW's Jaime Clark hit a low line drive to the right side of the field. It hit the front of first base and bounced high into the air. The ball went over second baseman Kira Ching's head and into shallow right field. Hauxhurst was able to score on the play and Clark was awarded a double for a 3-2 Husky lead at the end of three innings.
Washington took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, thanks to Clark's RBI double. Becky Simpson was hit by a pitch and stole second. Clark's line drive to the left field fence, scored Simpson for the game's first run.
The Cardinal answered in the top of the second, scoring two runs. Michelle Thiry, playing in front of her hometown crowd, started things with a single to right center. Cassi Brangham followed with a base hit to left and Jenni Shideler reached on a fielding error. Ramona Shelburne grounded into a fielder's choice, forcing Thiry out at home. Then Robin Walker's single to shallow center was enough to score Brangham and Shideler for a 2-1 Stanford lead.
In the third inning, Washington regained the lead with two more runs. Rita Roach reached on an error and advanced to second on Simpson's ground out. Hauxhurst then singled in Roach to tie the game 2-2, setting up Clark's game-winning double.
Stanford had a runner in scoring position in the sixth when Beeson and Jessica Allister both singled. But UW got out of the inning with a strikeout.
Tori Nyberg relieved starting pitcher Maureen LeCocq in the sixth after LeCocq allowed a lead off single to Clark. The Huskies rallied to load the bases with one out. But Nyberg struck out two Huskies to end the inning.
LeCocq went five innings, giving up four hits and three runs (one earned). She took the loss to fall to 14-6. Nyberg pitched the one inning without giving up a hit.
In the circle for Washington, Tia Bollinger went the distance, giving up five hits and two runs (both unearned). She had six strikeouts and one walk and improves to 28-4 with the win.
The Cardinal continues its Pac-10 road trip at No. 2 UCLA on Saturday and Sunday. Tomorrow's game is set for 2:00 p.m. with Sunday's first pitch at 1:00 p.m.
