Men's Tennis Blanks Pacific In First Round Of NCAA Championships

May 12, 2001

STANFORD, Calif. - The second-ranked Stanford University men's tennis team (22-1) began its quest for a second straight NCAA Team Championship with a 4-0 win over the University of the Pacific (14-11) on Saturday afternoon at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium.

The Cardinal will next take on 37th-ranked Oklahoma State (14-8) in the second round on Sunday at noon at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium. Oklahoma State advanced with a 4-1 victory over Florida (9-17) on Saturday morning.

Stanford had little trouble in doubles, losing just three points in the two matches. The Cardinal clinched the point when the 14th-ranked team of Scott Lipsky (Merrick, NY/Bellmore-Kennedy HS) and David Martin (Key Biscayne, FL/Boca Raton Prep) defeated Dietrich Haug (Freudenstadt, Germany (Gymnasium Freudenstadt) and Gernot Kerschbaumer (Klagenfurt, Austria/University of Toledo) 8-2 at No. 2.

The Cardinal then took a quick 3-0 lead with convincing wins at Nos. 5 and 6 singles. The 97th-ranked Lipsky blanked Kerschbaumer 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6, while senior Ali Ansari (Houston, TX/Second Baptist HS) beat Maxime Lecroix (Auch, FranceUniversity of Toulouese) 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5.

Pacific stretched Stanford from there - sending two matches into three sets - before Martin clinched the win with a 7-6 (6), 6-3 win over Claes Lindholm (Karlskrona, Sweden/Chpmanskolan, Sweden) at No. 2.

"Today's match was a great tune up for tomorrow, because the styles of play of Oklahoma State and Pacific are similar," Stanford head coach Dick Gould said. "We did a good job in doubles, and looked very crisp. To a man, we did some things well in doubles that we had been struggling with. It was also great to get a couple of quick points on the board in singles. I have to give both Ali and Scott credit, because they've been playing very well lately."
