The Stanford Women's Crew team competed in the Pac-10 Conference Championships today in Rancho Cordova, CA. All three boats entered qualified for the grand finals of the regatta from their placements in the morning heats. The novice eight fought for position all the way down the course holding positions third to five with their final placement being fifth out of fourteen. The second varsity had their race of the day in the heats to make the grand final not saving much for the final and finished sixth overall out of fourteen.
The varsity eight truly saved their best race of the year for last as they finished fourth, two places ahead of their incoming seed. The varsity took control of fourth place early in the race as they finished with open water ahead of both WSU and OSU, two crews that had defeated the Cardinal earlier in the season. This is the best finish for the varsity eight since 1995. The varsity eight is a long shot for an NCAA bid. The past three seasons the west region has received four bids to the Championship. This season will include a fifth region so the bids may not go as deep in the west. The NCAA will announce the bids on Tuesday May 15.
