K.J. Hippensteel Named District 8 First Team All-Academic

May 22, 2001

STAMFORD, Conn. - Stanford University junior men's tennis player K.J. Hippensteel (Roanoke, VA/International Academy) has been selected to the 2001 Verizon Academic All-District 8 Spring At-Large First Team. In addition, Cardinal sophomore men's tennis player David Martin (Key Biscayne, FL/Boca Raton Prep) was named to the Second Team.

The team is selected by voting among members of the Collegiate Sports Information Directors of America in the district. Each member of the team will now represent the district - which is comprised of schools in Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington and British Columbia - on the Verizon Academic All-America ballot. To be eligible for consideration for the team a student-athlete must carry a GPA of 3.2 or higher, must be in at least his second year of participation at the school and must be an important squad contributor.

Hippensteel, who owns a 3.50 GPA in Human Biology, is currently ranked 15th in the nation in doubles and 18th in singles by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. The two-time All-American has won both the ITA Regional Singles Championship and Pacific-10 Conference Doubles Championship this season.

Martin, who has a 3.65 GPA and has yet to declare a major, is ranked 14th in the nation in doubles and 53rd in singles. The Second Team All-Pac-10 selection captured two doubles titles this season - the ITA Regional and the Pacific-10 Conference Invitational.
