STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. - Defending NCAA Singles Champion Laura Granville (Chicago, IL/The Latin School) of Stanford University began defense of her title with a straight set victory in first round action of the NCAA Women's Tennis Singles Championships on Tuesday at the Lincoln Tennis Center.
The top-seeded Granville, who is ranked #1 in the nation by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, defeated Janet Bergman of Wake Forest 6-3, 6-1 in first round action. The Stanford sophomore's second round match will take place on Wednesday.
Joining Granville in the second round will be junior teammate Lauren Kalvaria (Indialantic, FL/Boca Raton Prep). The ninth-ranked Kalvaria defeated 38th-ranked Sarah Riske of Vanderbilt for the second time in as many days. Kalvaria prevailed 6-3, 6-3, on Tuesday, after winning 6-2, 6-2 on Monday in the Cardinal's 4-0 win over the Commodores in the NCAA Team Finals.
Stanford also had a pair of players eliminated in the opening round.
Junior Gabriela Lastra (Reno, NV/Reno HS), who is ranked 17th in the country, dropped a 6-0, 6-3 decision to 20th-ranked Mirela Vladulescu of Alabama-Birmingham. Also falling on Tuesday was 50th-ranked junior Keiko Tokuda (Clifton, NJ/Clifton HS), who lost to 26th-ranked Aarthi Venkatesan of Georgia 6-3, 6-3.
