Softball Has Three Named To All-America First Team

May 23, 2001

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - Juniors Sarah Beeson and Jessica Mendoza and sophomore Dana Sorensen were named to the 2001 NFCA/Louisville Slugger All-American team as announced at the Women's College World Series on Wednesday night.

The same three players were All-Americans in 2000. For Mendoza, it was the third time she had earned First Team accolades in her career while Beeson and Sorensen were Second Team selections a year ago.

Mendoza, an outfielder, is leading Stanford with her .415 batting average and 14 home runs. She also has 32 stolen bases and 80 hits, including 18 doubles. Mendoza has hit over .400 her entire career.

Beeson has started every game at first base this year. She is hitting at a .399 clip and has collected 77 hits. She has broken the single-season records this year for doubles (23) and RBI (65).

Sorensen has already broken the single-season record for strikeouts (279) and wins (25). In just her sophomore season, she ranks second on Stanford's all-time strikeout list with 435 for her career.

The Cardinal placed three players on the First Team for the first time in school history. Arizona led all teams with five All-American selections while UCLA had four.

Stanford (52-14-1) is playing in the Women's College World Series for the first time in the program's eight-year history. As the sixth seed, the Cardinal will take on third-seeded LSU on Thusday at 6:00 p.m. central time.
