Long Beach, Ca - Stanford freshman Tony Azevedo made a successful return to his hometown of Long Beach as he helped the top-ranked and unbeaten Cardinal water polo team to an 11-6 victory over sixth-ranked Long Beach State in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation game on Saturday at the 49er Campus Pool.
Azevedo, who graduated from Long Beach Wilson High School and whose father (Rick) is the head coach at Long Beach State, scored three goals to help lead the Cardinal attack.
"I might brag a little to my sister, but I'm worried if I say anything to my dad," said a smiling Azevedo after Stanford's eleventh victory of the season.
Stanford jumped to an early 3-0 lead at the end of the first period. Jeff Nesmith, another Long Beach Wilson graduate, scored the third goal of the first period and added another goal later in the second quarter to help the Cardinal preserve a 7-3 halftime lead.
Brian Darrow added three goals for Stanford which travels to tenth-ranked UC Santa Barbara on Sunday (Oct. 21) for a 1:00 p.m. game.
