Women's Crew Closes Out Fall Season On Impressive Note

SEATTLE, Wash. - The Stanford Women's Crew wrapped up their fall season today by charging to a second place collegiate finish at the 20th annual Head of the Lake Regatta. The conditions were perfect for racing as the Cardinal varsity boat finished four seconds back from the 2001 NCAA Champion Washington Huskies. Junior Molly Loeb states, "Our goal for this season is to be able to compete with the best crews in the country." The Cardinal did just that finishing third overall with Pennsylvania, their next competitor, 19 seconds back.

The second varsity boat came up with their best performance ever at the Head of the Lake finishing in 5th place within close reach of Pac-10 competitors OSU and WSU. Junior Ashley Maloney commended the efforts of both coxswains Kelly Garneski and Wendy Hoeveler "who steered and raced great courses this weekend." Head Coach Aimee Baker was pleased with the performance of the squad and adds, "If we continue at the pace we have set this fall we will continue to challenge the top crews in the the spring season." The Cardinal varsity squad begins their winter training next week in preparation for the spring season with their first race set for March 29 against Sacramento State University.
